Metzingen is a mid-sized city in Baden-Württemberg at the foot of the Swabian Alb and south of the Stuttgart metropolitan area, near Reutlingen. After Reutlingen, it is the second largest city in the Reutlingen administrative district and acts as a focal point for the surrounding towns within the Neckar-Alb region.
Metzingen is well known even outside the region due mainly to its numerous factory outlet stores. Metzingen has been the major district city since 1 October, 1990. By area, the majority of Metzingen (80.2%) belongs to the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve.
